Long Island Driver Texting Behind Wheel Crashes into Tree, Dies: Police

The West Hempstead man was pronounced dead at the hospital

A 59-year-old Long Island man died when his car veered off the road and slammed into a tree Thursday night, and police say he was texting behind the wheel when his vehicle went astray.

Michele Guglielmi, of West Hempstead, was driving his 1998 Volvo east on Stewart Avenue in Garden City shortly before 10 p.m. when he crossed into the westbound lanes, hitting a tree on the north side of the road, police said.

He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

A police investigation revealed he had been texting on his cell phone just prior to the accident.

The vehicle was impounded for brake and safety checks, and the investigation is ongoing.
