Temporary Safety Fence Going Up on George Washington Bridge to Prevent Suicides

Temporary safety fencing is being put up along the George Washington Bridge to prevent people from leaping to their death, officials tell the Daily News.

Construction crews shut down the south walkway of the upper level as the work got underway earlier this week. The project is expected to be completed by the end of the year, according to the Daily News.

Pedestrians and bicyclists are being moved to the north walkway.

After 16 deaths in 2013 and 18 fatal jumps in 2014 and 2015, there were only a dozen suicides at the bridge in 2016. A Port Authority spokesman told the Daily News that 12 people have taken their lives on the GWB in 2017.

Port Authority owns the bridge.
