Teens Rescued After Sailboat Capsizes in Long Island Sound: Police

A police boat rescued two teenagers who spent 90 minutes atop their sailboat's hull after it overturned in rough waters Saturday in the Long Island Sound.

The two teens, both 19-year-old Smithtown residents, were located about 11:30 a.m. by Suffolk County Marine Bureau officers about three miles north of the Nissequogue River, police said.

A passing boater contacted police after spotting the two teens atop the hull of a 16-foot Hobie Cat Catamaran. The teens were unable to right their boat because of waves that were as high as five feet.

The marine patrol brought the teens and their sailboat to Long Beach in Smithtown.
