Man Sentenced in 2014 ‘Flying Drop Kick' Attack on Mom, Baby in the Bronx

A 19-year-old man who pleaded guilty to taking a "flying drop kick" at a mother holding her 3-month-old son as he tried to steal her cellphone in the Bronx last year was sentenced Friday to three and a half years in prison.

Alonzo Brown also faces four years of post-release supervision. He waived his right to appeal.

According to court documents, Brown rushed Odilia Orozco from behind on East Tremont Avenue Nov. 28, 2014 as the woman walked down the street with her phone in her hand, her 3-month-old son strapped to her chest. Brown kicked the woman in the back, knocking her and her baby to the ground.

He then grabbed the woman's phone and ran off. The attack was captured on surveillance video.

At his sentencing Friday, Orozco said through an interpreter that she continues to experience pain in the part of her body where Brown attacked her.

"I am [still] afraid to go out in the street unless I have to," Orozco said. "Now that I will know he will not be there, then I'll feel safe."

Orozco said she thinks her now-toddler son is also still frightened by the attack.
