Tractor-Trailer Overturns, Snarls Traffic on Tappan Zee Bridge

A tractor-trailer overturned on the approach to the Tappan Zee Bridge Friday morning, snarling traffic on the roadway and damaging roadway barriers.

State Police said that the tractor-trailer carrying scrap metal broke an axle and flipped near the Tarrytown tolls just before 9 a.m. The vehicle then hit a barrier and spewed junk across Interstate 287.

At least one other vehicle was hit, but it wasn't clear if anyone was injured in the crash.

The Journal Record reports that the crash seriously damaged a barrier separating northbound and southbound lanes, forcing officials to shut down all lanes for several hours.

All lanes reopened by mid-afternoon Friday.

Traffic cameras from the area showed long lines of cars approaching the bridge Friday morning, and NBC 4 New York traffic maps showed backups stretching back as far as White Plains in Westchester County and the Shops at Nanuet in Rockland County.
