Suspect Injured in Police-Involved Shooting in Brooklyn: NYPD

Police shot and wounded a man they say opened fire at them early Friday in Brooklyn after a confrontation with another man, according to the NYPD.

The two plainclothes officers, patrolling Bushwick as part of an anti-crime unit, found a 52-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his arm at Madison Street and Knickerbocker Avenue at about 1 a.m., authorities say. 

The man gave police a description of the gunman, and the two cops began canvassing the area.

The officers found a man matching the gunman's description a few blocks away, and the man opened fire at the police, the NYPD says. The man fired several shots, hitting the cops' unmarked patrol car. 

Then, authorities say, the cops returned fire. The suspect took off. The officers chased after him, and at several other officers responded and opened fire at the man, hitting him in the left calf.

The suspect, identified as 27-year-old Jerrol Harris, was taken into custody after being shot, authorities say. A .40-caliber handgun was recovered at the scene.

The 57-year-old who had been shot and the alleged gunman were both taken to area hospitals for treatment. Six officers, including the two plainclothes officers, were taken to area hospitals to treat ringing in their ears.

Harris is facing multiple charges, including attempted murder, assault, criminal use of a firearm, attempted murder of a police officer and criminal possession of a weapon.
