Suspect In Calif. Synagogue Explosion Arrested in Cleveland

FBI says homeless man had bought a bus ticket to New York

A man suspected of setting off a bomb at a synagogue in California last week has been arrested in Cleveland, federal officials said Monday evening.

Ron Hirsch, age 60, who also used the last name Fisher, is described by the FBI as homeless. He was wanted for questioning regarding a bombing outside the Chabad House Lubavitch synagogue in Santa Monica, California last Thursday, officials said.

The blast shattered some windows in the building and sent a piece of metal pipe, encased in cement, crashing through the roof of a house next door. No one was hurt. Hirsch bought a bus ticket to New York later that day, the FBI said Monday.

Surveillance cameras captured pictures of him getting off the bus in Denver Friday, then buying a ticket for another east-bound bus, officials said.

He was arrested Monday night after a tip from a member of the public, officials said.

Investigators have not yet come up with a motive for the bombing.

They say Hirsch was often at synagogues and Jewish community centers, seeking charity.
