Arrest in Stray-Bullet Slay of Grandmother

Police say the gunman whose stray bullet killed an 87-year-old grandmother in Brooklyn two years ago has been arrested.

Malcolm Mitchell, 26, was arrested Friday in connection with the slaying of Anna Surman, police said.  According to the New York Post, he has a criminal record that includes gang assault and grand larceny.  It is unclear if he has an attorney.

Anna Surman was sitting on a bench in the courtyard of the Surfside Gardens Houses in Coney Island admiring the flowers and feeding a neighbor's cat when she was shot in August, 2009.

Police found Surman with a gunshot wound in her neck.  Emergency crews rushed her to Lutheran Hospital but it was too late.

Surman was a retired history professor in her native Moscow, the Daily News reported.
