Don't be alarmed when the Statue of Liberty goes dark this week.
Officials say crews are finishing up work on a new emergency backup generator for Liberty Island, one of the last remaining Hurricane Sandy recovery projects. As part of the project, the lighting system that illuminates the exterior of Lady Liberty will be turned off from 6 p.m. to 5 a.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
In March, the Statue of Liberty stayed mysteriously dark one night when crews forgot to flip the breaker back on after conducting an emergency repair. The unplanned outage caused a stir on social media as people wondered if there was a symbolic explanation. Ultimately, the National Park Service said, it was just "human error."
The Statue of Liberty receives over 4.5 million visitors a year.
