Parishioners were shocked to see the damage when they arrived at St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church in Palisades Park.

Police are trying to find the person who beheaded the statue of the patron saint of a northern New Jersey church.

Parishioners were shocked to see the damage when they arrived at St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church in Palisades Park on Sunday.

The statue of St. Nicholas was installed outside the church in 2008.

A 71-year-old parishioner told The Record newspaper the vandalism could have been the work of young pranksters or "religious lunatics.''
