10-Year-Old Boy and 89-Year-Old Woman Both Die in Snow at Their New York Homes, Police Say

The young boy and the elderly woman are the latest deaths attributed to Tuesday's ferocious nor'easter

A 10-year-old boy died after being trapped under a pile of snow and an 89-year-old woman was found dead in the snow outside her home, authorities say, marking the latest New York deaths attributed to this week's brutal nor'easter.

Police found the boy in the snow in Niagara County Wednesday afternoon; he was pronounced dead at a hospital. They believe he was digging a tunnel when it collapsed on him. Parts of the county got more than 2 feet of snow.

The elderly woman's body was found Tuesday morning when a private snowplow contractor shoveling snow at her home near Syracuse found her body by the front door.

Investigators say the woman likely slipped and fell or suffered a medical emergency as she walked outside.

Authorities say it's not known how long she had been outside. Neither her identity nor the boy's identity have been released.

News of their deaths comes a day after police said two other people in New York, a 47-year-old man in Staten Island home and a 38-year-old man in Walkill, died of apparent heart attacks as they tried to clear snow outside their respective storms.

The nor'easter dumped more than a foot of snow in some areas Tuesday, creating hazardous travel conditions and suspending or delaying transit service. Nearly 3,000 flights were canceled at the three major airports, creating crowding on hundreds of flights Wednesday.
