Six of the Best Startups to Work for Are in New York City, Ranking Says

LinkedIn has released a list of the top startups in the United States and New York has emerged as a hub for innovation and entrepreneurship with six startups on the list of Top Companies--Startup edition.

To qualify as a startup, companies must be 10 years old or younger and have at least 100 employees. The companies must also “remain independent and privately held and have at least one round of venture-backed funding.” LinkedIn compiled this list out of nearly 25,000 eligible venture-backed companies.

WeWork claimed the highest spot for NYC, landing in the top 5. The company provides shared workspaces for freelancers and entrepreneurs. The company is valued at $20 billion and boasts 150,000 users and 170 locations as workspaces.

LinkedIn pointed out and commended the company for its new employee scavenger hunt that connects new staff to the company’s buildings around the city. WeWork also hosts weekly “Thank God it’s Monday” dinners for the entire staff.

Just one spot shy of the top 10 is General Assembly, an education management startup valued at $452 million. What makes this a great company to work for, according to LinkedIn is the 16 weeks of parental leave for a primary caregiver. The startup reported to LinkedIn that in the first half of 2017, a quarter of all employees had received promotions.

Glossier, a cosmetics company driven by social media marketing, landed in the top 20. Glossier’s new headquarters are in SoHo. Since its launch in 2014, the company has experienced an annual employment growth rate of 257 percent.

Convene made the list's top 30. What makes this communal meeting space company unique to work for is the opportunity employees have to meet with the company’s co-founders over coffee, according to LinkedIn.

The company is also known to give new employees a solid chocolate business card with their name on it as a welcome gift.

Within the top 50 is Moda Operandi, a luxury goods and jewelry startup that allows customers to pre-order outfits online that are straight from the runway. LinkedIn commended the company's dog-friendly office environment and weekly happy hours. Employees also get bonus and equity at every level.

Casper, a retail startup, also made the list. The direct-to-consumer mattress maker takes employee sleep very seriously. All employees have access to office nap pods for an afternoon nap. Also, employees receive a full suite of Casper sleep products for their home. Casper is valued at $920 million, according to LinkedIn.

LinkedIn compiled this list of startups using a base of more than 500 million members.

The list reflects member engagement and growth. They observed trends among job seekers who visited company pages and applied for jobs with the startups. Data also showed patterns in competitive opportunities that were leading employees from top companies to these startups, and amount of promotions.
