Did you know where you live influences your chances of finding a romantic partner? Certain places make dating easier than others when one considers cost of living, the number of single people that live in the area and how many attractions are in a state.

With Valentine’s Day around the corner, and keeping in mind that location can influence one’s odds at finding love, WalletHub looked into which states are the best and worst for singles. To answer that question, the website compared the 50 states across 28 key indicators. It turns out New York is among the top best states for singles.

According to WalletHub, the Empire State came in fourth place overall thanks to a high score in the dating operators rank (No.2) and romance and fun rank (No. 1). Perhaps, New York could have scored higher overall if it didn’t place last in the dating economic rank.

Additionally, New York made a number of appearances in individual key indicators, which also contributed to its high overall rank as it placed among the top states with the highest share of single adults. It was also tied in first place — along with California, Florida and Texas — when it comes to having the most restaurants per capita.

New York also tied with California, Texas and Iowa as having the most movie theaters per capita. However, it also placed as the state with the lowest median annual household income adjusted for cost of living.

New York is the only state in the region that placed in the top 10. New Jersey came in at No. 18 overall. However, it did place in the No. 4 spot as a state with one of the highest median annual household income adjusted for cost of living. It also came in fourth as having the lowest crime rate compared to other states.

Additionally, WalletHub determined that, overall, Connecticut ranked in the No. 22 spot.

So which states are the best and worst for singles? Coming in on top to reign supreme among all others is Florida. Meanwhile, at the other end of the spectrum, coming in as the worst state for singles is West Virginia, which has among the fewest mobile-dating opportunities and lowest median annual household income adjusted for cost of living.
