12-Year-Old Boys Arrested for Throwing Shopping Cart Off Ledge That Hit Woman

The cart was thrown from four stories up.

Two 12-year-old boys have been arrested for throwing a shopping cart from a four-story ledge that hit a woman and critically injured her.

Sources tell NBC New York that the boys are being charged with assault and criminal possession of a weapon. They will be charged as juveniles in the Sunday attack.

The 47-year-old victim, who was walking with a young child when she was hit, is in critical condition.

Police and witnesses said the boys were on a fourth-level walkway that connects a parking garage to a Target store near East 116th Street and Pleasant Avenue Sunday evening.

After they pushed the cart over the edge, it bounced off a sign and landed on the woman.

"It hit her in the head. She just collapsed," Orlando Campos, 30, told the Daily News. "She wasn't moving at all."

Carlos Vargas said he saw the boys pushing the cart just before it went over.

"Their friend was trying to stop it, saying 'Don't do it!'" Vargas told the News.
