The Rev. Al Sharpton has led a peace march and rally in Hartford, Connecticut, calling for peace after weeks of gun violence in that city.
Sharpton and Hartford residents traveled along Garden Street Saturday afternoon in an effort to stop the rise in violence crime. The march preceded an event called "Stop the Violence & Cease the Killing" at Shiloh Baptist Church that evening.
The New York City-based civil rights activist and TV host told the crowd that the community needs to come together.
There have been five homicides in recent weeks in Hartford and several other violent crimes, including a drive-by shooting that seriously wounded a minister outside his church.
Sharpton said he gave $1,000 toward a Hartford memorial to honor those who have died, responding to a spectator who criticized an appeal for donations.
