Schumer Now Supports Same-Sex Marriage

Schumer is up for re-election in 2010

Sen. Charles Schumer of New York has apparently reversed course and says he now supports gay marriage.

The gay rights group Empire State Pride Agenda says the influential Democrat expressed the change at a meeting Sunday with the organization's executive director.

Schumer confirmed the change in a statement to the New York Daily News. He says "equality is something that has always been a hallmark of America."

Schumer previously supported civil unions, which give same-sex couples some of the same rights as marriage.
