Schumer: Let's Disconnect Credit Card Robo Calls

After taming the oh-so-annoying car warranty robo-calls, Sen. Chuck Schumer is setting his sights on credit card and mortgage spam calls.

Schumer says he wants the federal government to stop companies that target consumers with automated calls pitching bogus credit card interest rates and mortgage scams.

"We got the FTC to shut down the car-warranty scams and now it’s time they shut down credit card scams as well,” Schumer said. “The credit card interest rates scams’ perpetrators have also found a way around the Do Not Call List. The FTC has to track them down and then shut them down to put an end to this nuisance once and for all.”

The powerful Democrat said Monday he's sent a letter to Federal Trade Commission Chairman Jon Leibowitz asking the agency to take action against the unsolicited calls to cell phones and land lines.

Schumer says the scams are even targeting people who are on the Do Not Call list.

Earlier this month, the FTC obtained a court order blocking "robo-calls" on auto warrantees. A federal court in Illinois issued a restraining order on three major companies behind the calls.

Schumer says New Yorkers who receive one of these calls should file an official complaint through the FTC's website, www.donotcall.gov.
