1 School Bus Involved in Hit-and-Run, Another Catches Fire in Newark

Two school buses were involved in accidents in New Jersey's largest city Tuesday morning -- a hit-and-run in one case and a fire in the other, authorities say.

Firefighters were first called to the scene of a school bus fire at Mt. Prospect and Elmwood Avenue East in Newark shortly before 8 a.m. Authorities say the driver had smelled smoke, pulled over and gotten the children -- three Camden Street School elementary students -- off the bus safely.

The driver hurt his knee in the fray, but none of the kids were injured. Firefighters extinguished the flames and the cause of the blaze is under investigation. The extent of the damage to the bus wasn't immediately clear.

Separately, shortly after 8 a.m., police responded to a call on Franklin Avenue about a school bus that had been struck by a vehicle that fled the scene. Twenty-nine Park Elementary School students were on that bus. No one was hurt. That accident is also under investigation.
