School Bus Slams Into Telephone Pole in Westchester; 12 Hospitalized: Police

A school bus slammed into a telephone pole in Westchester County and 12 people were taken to the hospital, authorities said.

None of the injuries appeared to be life-threatening. Twenty-two people were on the bus, including the driver. The ages of those taken to the hospital weren't immediately clear.

The bus from Ossining High School was making a left out of a parking lot when it hit the utility pole at about 11:30 a.m.

Daniel Miranda's brother was one of the passengers on board, he told NBC 4 New York over the phone. He said his brother told him that as the bus driver turned out of the parking lot, he didn't turn all the way to the left, and he went straight into a pole.

The pole hit the top of the roof, and the passengers had to exit out the back, he said. Electrical wires dangled just feet from the bus as the students escaped.

No other vehicles appeared to have been involved.

Con Edison was called to the scene, but the crash didn't cause any outages.

It's not clear yet what caused the crash but police are looking into the possibility the bus driver had some kind of medical emergency.
