A 78-year-old New York City man is dead after an accident that authorities are blaming on Hurricane Sandy.
Police said William McKeon was found unconscious Tuesday at the bottom of a wet, sandy stairwell in a beachfront apartment building in the Rockaways section of Queens.
Police said the stairwell was pitch-black. Many buildings in the neighborhood have been without power since the storm.
McKeon died at a hospital Tuesday evening.
The city's medical examiner ruled Wednesday that the death was storm-related.
