Ruth Madoff Visits Husband Bernie in Jail

Wife of disgraced financier makes trip to Metro Corrections

Ruth Madoff paid a visit to her jailed husband Bernard Madoff Monday afternoon.

News 4 New York was the only television station to shoot video of Mrs. Madoff, wearing all black, as she walked toward Metro Corrections in Lower Manhattan.

Ruth Madoff showed up at about 4:45 p.m. Monday and when she came out at 6:30 p.m., she got into a waiting black SUV. She said nothing to News 4 New York.

It's not clear if Monday's visit was her first since her husband was ordered directly to jail after his guilty plea last month.

News 4 has learned that Madoff gets one hour with a visitor each month, law enforcement sources said.  Madoff can be in the same room with his guest and they are allowed to touch, but there can be no exchange of gifts.

Bernard Madoff is in jail awaiting sentencing for a Ponzi scheme that bilked investors out of billions of dollars. As his legal saga has played out for several months, Madoff's wife and other family members have kept a low profile.
