Rutgers University is closing its three on-campus student pharmacies due to significant losses and a decrease in use.

Rutgers spokesman Neal Buccino says the pharmacies lost over $400,000 in each of the past two years. Prescriptions have also averaged decreases of 525 per year since 2015.

The shutdown is expected to occur sometime this fall, but no official date has been announced.

The biggest of the three, Hurtado Health Center pharmacy, will stay open until the existing prescriptions are transferred to local pharmacies.

Buccino says the university will share additional information about alternative options with students in the next few weeks.
