Robbery Suspect Shot in Police Gunfight

Police say a robbery suspect is under arrest and hospitalized after being shot in a gunfight with Long Island police.

Nassau County police say Gary Spencer of Queens was wounded in the shoulder in the shooting early Saturday.

Police say officers were chasing the 50-year-old Spencer and three others believed to have robbed an Elmont home. The suspects were in a van.

Police say one or more of the suspects began shooting at the officers, and they returned fire. Detective Lt. Kevin Smith says the suspects' bullets hit the police car's windshield, but no officers were hurt.

Spencer and the others were arrested on charges including attempted murder and robbery.

Police didn't know whether Spencer had a lawyer. His brother said he was unaware of the incident.
