Rikers Correction Officers Accused of Beating Up Young Inmate in Supply Closet, Lying About

Two veteran Rikers Island correction officers have been indicted for allegedly beating up a young inmate in a supply closet at the jail in December.

Forty-year-old Medzid Kolenovic, an eight-year veteran of the Department of Correction, and Jean Destine, who has worked with the department since 2006, pleaded not guilty at their arraignment Friday to a bevy of charges, including assault, official misconduct and falsifying business records.

Authorities allege Kolenovic started arguing with 18-year-old inmate Ambirorix Celedonio when Celedonio stood up to get a piece of food from a friend at a nearby table during lunch in the mess hall Dec. 9. After the verbal spat, Kolenovic opened the door to a supply closet and invited Celedonio inside to settle the matter, according to prosecutors.

Destine followed the two into the closet, where there were no security cameras, prosecutors said. When the three emerged, Celedonio allegedly had a bruised and bloodied face.

In written reports, Kolenovic and Destine claimed that Celedonio was the aggressor and that they used appropriate force in response, according to court documents. Kolenovic is also charged with initially reporting injuries to his hands, yet filing for workers' compensation benefits based on alleged injuries to his torso and face.

Kolenovic and Destine each face up to four years in prison if convicted. Both men surrendered to authorities Friday and were released on their own recognizance.

Information on attorneys for them wasn't immediately available.
