A correction officer was attacked at Rikers Island Thursday afternoon, authorities say.
A Department of Correction spokesman said an inmate assaulted the officer with a weapon at about 4:30 p.m. He sustained slash wounds to the head and face, according to Norman Seabrook, president of the Correction Officers' Benevolent Association.
The officer is being treated at a hospital.
The DOC spokesman said any inmate involved will be re-arrested but did not provide further information on suspects.
