A correction officer has been arrested for beating a Rikers Island inmate so badly that he lost vision in one of his eyes and then joining another correction officer in covering up the attack.

Correction officers Victor Rodman and Michelle Hubert were arrested Friday by investigators with the city’s Department of Investigation.

Rodman, 49, is charged with assault and filing false records. Hubert faces three counts of falsifying reports.

Officials said Rodman went to visit Hubert in her assigned area at Rikers in July 2009. After an inmate fight broke out, Rodman is accused of hitting one of the inmates so hard that he broke his nose and blinded him in the left eye.

Investigators said Rodman first submitted false reports denying he was ever in that section of the jail, and then admitted to being there but denied striking the inmate. Hubert also is accused of filing false reports that claimed Rodman never entered the area of Rikers where the fight occurred.

“These defendants are charged in a disturbing inmate assault and cover-up,” said DOI Commissioner Rose Gill Hearn.

Both officers were arraigned late Friday in Bronx criminal court and have been suspended without pay.

Rodman, of Bellport, has worked as a correction officer since May 1987.  Hubert has been an officer since 2006.  Both make $76,488 per year.

A call to the officers’ union representative and lawyer that represent the officers was not immediately returned.
