Rick Lazio's Web Site Says He's Running For Governor

Republican Rick Lazio is apparently running for governor of New York.

He's made no public announcement, but has formed a campaign committee. His Web site uses language that points to a run for the former Long Island congressman.

It says the 2010 governor's race is "critical" to New York's future and promises that "if elected," he'll get the state moving.

Lazio lost to Hillary Rodham Clinton in the 2000 Senate race after jumping in late when Rudy Giuliani bowed out.

Identifying himself as a "former congressman," Lazio put out a statement Thursday echoing Giuliani's call for a constitutional convention. Lazio also recommends abolishing the Senate and Assembly and replacing them with one body.

"The restructuring of the legislature should include an independent and non-partisan redistricting process," he said in the statement. "We need sweeping change in New York and neither party can provide it. The status quo has failed."

His spokesman didn't immediately return a call seeking comment.
