Retired NJ Police Officer Shoots Brother: Authorities

A retired police officer in New Jersey shot and seriously wounded his younger brother who had been staying with him for the past few days, authorities said Saturday.

John Towey, 62, a retired Belleville police officer, was charged with aggravated assault in the shooting, according to acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn Murray.

Towey shot his 58-year-old brother Friday night in Towey's home in Nutley, police said. The victim, whose name was not disclosed, was hospitalized in stable condition at University Hospital in Newark, Murray said, adding that a bullet had pierced his spine.

Further information about the shooting wasn't available.

Towey was being held at the Essex County Correctional Facility in lieu of $75,000 bail. No information was available as to whether Towey obtained a lawyer.
