Residents See Potential Danger in Fence Holes Near Rail Tracks

A group of Long Island residents are concerned that holes in fences along the railroad tracks in their community could be gateways to tragedy.

West Babylon civic leaders have complained about the fence holes for more than a year, they told NBC 4 New York.

"It's not acceptable," said Jay McGraw of the West Babylon Community Association. "This needs to be fixed because somebody could get hurt."

Adults and kids have been seen slipping through the fence holes to cross the tracks.

Residents also said that athletic fields are near the tracks and some youths use the area as a hangout.

Long Island Rail Road crews have repaired the holes, but residents say it's only a matter of time before someone cuts holes in the fence again.

Residents said LIRR should erect heavy-duty security fences in the area.
