Forty-five dogs and puppies rescued from a Missouri puppy mill are looking for new homes in our area.
The North Shore Animal League America’s headquarters in Port Washington - the world's largest no-kill animal rescue and adoption organization received the cute critters Thursday evening after they were rescued from inhumane breeding facilities.
Many of the dogs are popular small breeds sold in pet stores across the country including Pugs, Chihuahuas, Brussels Griffons, Japanese Chins, Papillions, Golden Retrievers, and Pyrenees among several other breeds.
The Animal League estimates there are 10,000 puppy mills nationwide. These animals were rescued from one of the approximately 1,500 unlicensed and unregulated breeding operations in Missouri. Breeding dogs are often raised in cruel conditions.
The pups are kept in dark, overcrowded and cold warehouses, in small cages with wire bottoms where they are unable to stand. They are not regularly fed, exercised, groomed and lack necessary medical attention.
New regulations in the Puppy Mill Cruelty Prevention Act, which recently passed in Missouri, has forced many mills to downsize their operations.
All the animals at the Port Washington shelter will get a thorough examination and receive medical treatment. They will be available for adoption on Friday, January 28th.
