Rescued Baby Seal Dies of Infection

An abandoned baby seal found near Montauk and taken in for care at a Long Island research facility has died from a respiratory infection, officials at the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation said Tuesday.

In a statement on Facebook, the Riverhead Foundation said the pup, named Ozzie "succumbed to the infection late last night."

"The biologists administered fluids and antibiotics all day yesterday and monitored his blood values every few hours, however, the young seal never showed any improvement," the statement said.

The 35-pound baby seal still had its umbilical cord attached when it was found on Feb. 12.
