2 Accused of Swindling NYC Renters Out of $60K: Prosecutors

Two people have been charged with allegedly running a rental fraud scheme that swindled dozens of people out of more than $60,000.

The Manhattan district attorney's office says the defendants' alleged actions left several prospective renters temporarily homeless.

Prosecutors say many of the renters believed they had signed legitimate leases. They said the scheme ran from late October 2013 to early March 2014.

Matthew Wada and Jennifer York were indicted Tuesday on multiple charges of fraud. The New York Times says their lawyers did not respond to requests for comment.

Court records shows that the prospective renters lost from $150 to $4,500.
