Reckless Driver Hits Store and House, Causing Gas Leak: Police

A driver crashed into a Long Island tire store, then crashed into a house with children inside and broke a gas line, police said.

Rodney Boone, 53, was charged with reckless driving, fleeing a police officer, driving with a suspended license and other traffic violations, Nassau County police said. He also had an outstanding warrant for violating a family court order.

Officers were attempting to stop Boone for failing to use his turn signal when he took off and struck the Nassau Tire and Wheel building on Franklin Avenue in Hempstead, police said.

Boone allegedly then took off and struck a nearby house on Franklin Avenue with six people inside, including children ages 4 and 6, police said. No one in the house was injured, but the home was evacuated.

National Grid Gas responded to turn off the gas and make repairs, police said.

Boone was arrested and taken to a hospital for complaints of pain, police said.

It wasn't clear whether Boone had an attorney.
