Stray Cat in Westchester Confirmed Rabid

Last week, the kitten began acting aggressively, and was later euthanized by a veterinarian

A stray kitten that roamed the grounds of a Westchester country club and day camp has been confirmed as rabid, county officials said.

The small gray kitten was seen at the New York Athletic Club and the Winged Foot Day Camp in New Rochelle, near the border with Pelham Manor, in early June. On June 6, someone took it home and cared for it. Last week, the kitten began acting aggressively, and was later euthanized by a veterinarian.

A woman who was bitten by the kitten is being treated, authorities said.

"When you see a stray or wild animal acting strangely, it's best to avoid contact with the animal and alert local authorities to avoid possible exposure to rabies," said Westchester County Health Commissioner Sherlita Amler.

Anyone who may have come into contact with stray cats in the area is is urged to immediately contact the Westchester Department of Health at 914-813-5159.
