Family Mourns 19-Year-Old Malaysia Jet Victim

Quinn Schansman was born in Fort Lee, N.J., in 1995

The family of Quinn Schansman, the only American who has been identified as having been on the Malaysia Airlines jet that crashed on Thursday, is mourning the loss of the 19-year-old New Jersey native. 

"We were very, very sad yesterday," said Ronald Schansman, Quinn's grandfather.

Quinn was born in Fort Lee in 1995 and was in his first year of college at the University of Amsterdam, studying business. He had moved with his father to Holland when he was 5.

Schansman said Quinn was on the flight because he was traveling to Indonesia to join his father, stepmother and siblings on vacation.

Flight MH17 was carrying 298 passengers and crew members when it was shot down over eastern Ukraine.

Schansman said he was was "angry" about the circumstances behind the crash, calling it a "senseless thing."
