2 Killed, Teen Injured in Queens Single-Car Crash: NYPD

Two people were killed and a 14-year-old boy broke both his legs after the car they were traveling in crashed off a Queens highway late Thursday, police say.

The car, a four-door sedan, was headed west on Belt Parkway near Farmers Boulevard and Rockaway Avenue in Springfield Gardens at about 10:45 p.m. when it went off the road and hit a light pole and tree, according to the NYPD.

The driver, 20, was pronounced dead at the scene, police say. A front-seat passenger, 19, died later at Jamaica Hospital.

The 14-year-old, riding in the back seat, was taken to Long Island Jewish Medical Center in stable condition.

Police say the car's driver was attempting to pass another car and swerved into the parkway's left lane, where it lost control and went off the road. Speed appears to have played a role in the crash.

No other cars were involved, and no other injuries were reported. The NYPD's traffic collision unit is investigating the crash.
