Queens Nonprofit Head Accused of Stealing Government Funds

Van R. Holmes turned himself in Tuesday in Queens

The head of a Queens nonprofit for kids is accused of stealing City Council grant money, officials said.

Van R. Holmes turned himself in Tuesday morning in Queens. He made no comment to media.

Prosecutors say Holmes allegedly took more than $80,000 grant money steered to his nonprofit, Young Leaders Institute, by lawmakers between 2007 and 2012. Authorities allege he falsified dozens of business records to support his claims for reimbursement.

He is charged with grand larceny, forgery and falsifying business records.

The Young Leaders Institute, according to its website, provides after-school programs, teen job-training programs and computer training for kids.
