Pro-Casino Group in New Jersey Gives Up 7 Weeks Before Election

The group backing a constitutional amendment to expand casino gambling in New Jersey said Thursday it was dropping its ad campaign, with polls showing overwhelming opposition.

Our Turn NJ, backed by real estate executives (and proposed casino developers) Paul Fireman and Jeffrey Gural, said its position was "untenable."

"The current political climate in New Jersey and voters' concerns about the lack of details relating to the effort have proved overwhelming," the group's statement said.

Fireman and Gural added, "with great reluctance we have decided to suspend the paid media component of the statewide campaign.”

A Rutgers-Eagleton Poll released on Monday found only 35 percent of voters backed the amendment as proposed on the Nov. 8 ballot. It would allow for two casinos to be built in the northern part of the state.
