Thousands of Power Outages Reported on Long Island as Nor'easter Churns Through

Power was knocked out to thousands of customers on Long Island as heavy wind and rain from a slow-moving nor'easter knocked down power lines, officials say.

More than 10,000 customers were without power in Nassau and Suffolk counties at the height of outages late Wednesday, according to PSEG. About 1,700 customers were still without power Thursday morning.

Crews worked to repair power lines, according to spokeswoman Elizabeth Flagler. Additional manpower was called in to work overnight.

Downed trees and power lines were reported across Long Island, including in Lake Grove, where police had to block off Pond Path and Morning Glory Drive as crews cut up a tree and removed it from the road (below).

The nor’easter has been dumping rain from the Jersey Shore to New York City, Long Island and upstate New York since early Wednesday.

Storm Team 4 says the storm is expected to weaken as Thursday wears on, with only patches of isolated showers remaining by the afternoon. It will be chilly and windy Thursday, with highs climbing into the 50s.

Friday will be partly sunny with highs in the low 60s. A brisk breeze will hang around for most of the day.

Storm Team 4 says Friday's weather sets the stage for a balmy weekend, with sunny skies and temperatures in the 60s drying out the region.
