Postal Police Officer Shot by Fake Cops in Newark: Sources

An off-duty postal police officer was shot in in the hand by a pair of robbers pretending to be cops, law enforcement sources tell NBC 4 New York.

The postal officer was driving on 18th and Winans avenues in Newark when he was pulled over by what appeared to be a police cruiser at about 5 a.m. Thursday, the sources say.

The police impersonators got out of their car, a white Ford Crown Victoria, and attempted to rob the officer. The sources say that the officer reached for his gun and was shot by one of the suspects.

The robbers drove off after the shooting. The injured postal cop then drove to a police station to report the shooting, sources say.

The officer, who was shot in the hand, is expected to be OK.

No arrests have been made.
