Port Authority Sergeant Thwarts Suicide Attempt at Midtown Bus Terminal

A veteran Port Authority sergeant thwarted a suicide attempt by a distraught man in a parking lot at the midtown bus terminal Wednesday, authorities say.

The 29-year-old man had crossed over the railing and was sitting with his legs dangling from the fifth-floor ledge overlooking W. 42nd Street when Port Authority Police Sergeant Rudy Fernandez saw him and starting talking to him.

The man told Fernandez he wanted to end his life, the Port Authority said. Fernandez, who has 24 years in law enforcement, kept talking to the man and managed to convince him to leave the ledge safely.

The man was taken to Roosevelt Hospital for evaluation.
