Police Shoot and Wound Man With 2 Machetes in Brooklyn

When police arrived they say they were threatened by a man holding two machetes

Police shot and wounded a man who they say lunged at them with two large knives in Brooklyn Saturday night.

Officials say the officers were called to a home where there were reports of a dispute involving a man with knives on 46th Street in East Flatbush at around 8 p.m.

When police arrived they say they were threatened by Rene Loney, who was holding two machetes. One officer opened fire, striking Loney once in the arm and once in the hip.

Loney, 49, was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was listed in stable condition. He was later arrested and charged with menacing a police officer and criminal possession of a weapon.

The officers were also treated at a hospital for tinnitus.

Information on a lawyer for Loney was not immediately available.
