The suspect, 34-year-old John Matthews, was allegedly fighting with a woman before he stabbed a man who tried to break up the fight

Police are seeking a man who allegedly stabbed another man in the back with a screwdriver on Staten Island.

The suspect, 34-year-old John Matthews, was allegedly fighting with a woman on Sneden Avenue in Annadale at around 3 a.m. Friday and began choking her.

A man who saw Matthews assaulting the woman tried to help her, leading Matthews to take a screwdriver out of his pants pocket and stab the man repeatedly with it in the back.

The stabbing victim was treated for his injuries at Staten Island North Hospital.

Matthews fled and was last seen driving a 2003 four-door burgundy Lexus G3300. The vehicle was bearing New York State Plate number GPZ-0111 but police say there is a possibility that he changed the plates.

Anyone with information in regards about Matthews is asked to call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers Hotline at 800-577-TIPS.
