Police Search for Man Wanted in Jersey City Sex Attack

Police in Jersey City are looking for a man who attacked and sexually assaulted a woman as she waked into her apartment building Tuesday morning.

"He grabbed her in a chokehold as she was entering her building," said Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio, of the aggravated sexual assault at Bergen and Fairmount avenues in the early morning hours.

The suspect also stole cash from the victim, who is described as a young adult female.

“During the course of the attack, which went on for a period of time, a neighbor came upon the scene and the suspect was apparently scared off," the prosecutor said.

The male neighbor called police and the victim was taken to Christ Hospital and later released, the prosecutor said.

The shirtless suspect , who was wearing maroon sweatpants, fled on Bergen Avenue and fled north toward Montgomery Street.

The is described as being about 30 years old, physically fit, and standing about 5-feet-7, the prosecutor said.

DeFazio also said that security video from the area of the crime has been recovered by detectives. "Hopefully forensic evidence can be analyzed."

Anyone with information on the crime is asked to call the prosecutor's Special Victims Unit at (201) 915-1234 or Jersey City Police Department at (201) 547-JAIL.
