A police pursuit that went through two New Jersey counties ended when the car crashed into a tree, sparking a fiery crash that left two teenage boys seriously injured.

Authorities say Union Township police attempted to stop the car around 2:20 a.m. Monday. They say the teen driver managed to elude police for "a period of time" before the car struck a tree in Irvington.

The crash split the car in half and caused a small fire. The two teens were taken to a hospital, but further details on their injuries have not been released.

No charges have been filed so far regarding the pursuit, but authorities say the investigation is ongoing. It wasn't immediately clear why police initially tried to stop the vehicle.
