An NYPD detective pursuing a suspect was shot in the arm inside a Harlem subway station Tuesday afternoon, officials said.
Detective Kevin Herlihy was shot in the station at 145th Street and St. Nicholas Avenue on the A, B, C and D lines. He was taken to Columbia Presbyterian Hospital with a gunshot wound to the left forearm, and his condition was described as stable.
The suspect was shot multiple times and killed, officials said. A .22-caliber revolver was recovered at the scene, Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said at a hospital briefing.
Officials identified the suspect as Michael McBride, pictured below, who was suspected of shooting his ex-girlfriend's 21-year-old daughter Monday in the Rockaways, Kelly said. She was shot in the head during an argument and is in critical condition.
Kelly said officers from the Queens violent felony squad had McBride, 52, under surveillance on Tuesday, and were following him down 145th Street. McBride at some point seemed to realize he was being followed, and he entered the subway station to elude the police.
McBride entered the station at the southeast corner and crossed the mezzanine to the northwest exit, where he turned and fired at least four times at Herlihy, said police.
Herlihy returned fire, striking McBride in the chest, said Kelly. McBride walked up one flight of stairs leading to the exit landing, and collapsed.

"He not only survived but was able to stop his assailant from shooting anyone else," Kelly said.
McBride was taken to Harlem Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The shooting turned a busy Harlem intersection into a crime scene for hours, re-routing traffic and delaying trains. Bystanders said they were thankful they didn't get caught in the crossfire.
"I guess they took it in their own hands and did what they had to do," said Johnny Wilson of Harlem. "But they ain't thinking about everybody around them. Kids getting out of school, all types of factors. It's real busy over here."
It was the latest in a string of violent clashes between police and the public. Officer Peter Figoski was shot to death after a botched robbery in Brooklyn two months ago, and Officer Kevin Brennan was fired on at point-blank range during a struggle Jan. 31 and was shot in the head. He survived and was released from the hospital last week. A 21-year-old, Jose Ortiz, has pleaded not guilty in Brennan's shooting. Lamont Pride and four others have pleaded not guilty in the shooting of Figoski.
