Police Officer Hit by Car in Mount Vernon; Suspect on Loose

A police officer was hit by a car as he was conducting an investigation in Mount Vernon Friday morning, authorities say.

Police Commissioner Richard Burke said members of the Westchester District Attorney's Narcotics Initiative approached a 27-year-old suspect in a parking lot, and he tried to get away in his vehicle, a four-door sedan.

The suspect, identified as Leroi Bouche, hit a detective as he fled, and Bouche managed to escape.

The officer, a 14-year veteran of the force, was taken to the hospital in stable condition and is expected to survive.

Area schools were in lockout mode and streets were blocked temporarily as police investigated.

Police are searching for Bouche.
