Police Nab N.J. “Bonnie and Clyde” Team

The end of the road for New Jersey's version of "Bonnie and Clyde" lacked the bullets and fanfare of the infamous namesakes.

A man and woman were arrested and later confessed to a string of robberies and attempted robberies in Passaic and Bergen Counties on Sunday night, Clifton police said.

Off-duty Clifton police officer Ryan Maloney spotted a vehicle matching the description of one seen at most of the bodega robberies over the past two weeks.

Officer Maloney looked closely at the two nervous-looking occupants of the Chevy Blazer and noted they also matched descriptions of the "Bonnie and Clyde" couple, Clifton police spokesman Robert Rowan said.

The off-duty officer called police headquarters on his cell phone and Clifton police quickly surrounded the couple and arrested them without any resistance.

Police said they recovered a handgun when they made the arrests.

Leon Renee, 32, and Maria Cruz, 29, admitted to seven robberies and one attempted robbery in Garfield during police questioning, police said.

They admitted to robbing two bodega robberies in Clifton, two in Paterson, one in Woodland Park and two more in Garfield.

The Woodland Park robbery happened Sunday night, shortly before the couple's arrest in Clifton.
