Police shot and killed a man armed with a machete early Tuesday in the Bronx, officials say.

The NYPD said officers were conducting a search warrant at an apartment building on Brook Avenue near East 138th Street in Mott Haven around 4:15 a.m. They entered a third-floor apartment and made their way into a back room, where they encountered the armed man threatening officers.

Police ordered the man, identified as 69-year-old Mario Sanabria, to drop the machete, which had a 2-foot blade, but he didn't comply, the NYPD said at a Tuesday morning press conference.

Authorities said he was shot one time in the chest. He was later pronounced dead at a hospital.

No officers were injured in the shooting, detectives said. A weapon was recovered at the scene. An elderly man, who was not injured, was also taken to the hospital for observation, police said.

Sanabria was not the man police were looking for, according to officials, but neighbors say he was related to the person police were looking for. Another man who may be involved in the search warrant was detained.

Neighbors say they know the family and they never made any trouble.

"It was a very good family," said Mike Saidi.

"They are good people, they are not troublemakers or anything like that," said Carmen Pagan.

"I'm in shock," Pagan said. "I'm in shock that happened over there."
