Police have identified the Long Island residents who died in a small plane crash on Saturday.

The pilot, Robert Mark, and his girlfriend Susan Quagliano, both of Oakdale, died when the six-passenger Beechcraft A36 plane they were flying in crashed in Southold around 9:15 a.m., police and the Federal Aviation Authority said.

A dog that was on the plane survived the crash, escaped the wreckage and ran off, according to police. A local farmer later found the dog, police said.

Police said the aircraft was flying from Long Island's MacArthur Airport to New Bedford, Massachusetts, when it experienced "some type of mechanical failure" and crashed.

The plane crashed in a field on Harbes Family Farm on Sound Avenue, police said. The farm posted a message on Facebook saying that singing hayrides in the barnyard were cancelled on Saturday "due to unforseen circumstances."

No one on the ground was injured, according to police.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash.
